A farming community existed by the River Axe 4000 years before the Romans came to Seaton.  Seaton’s name comes from Ton old English for Town and its position by the sea. It was mentioned in The Doom’s Daybook in 1086 as part of the fleet.

A Medieval settlement grew up around St George’s Church on the river bank. This church is one of the oldest buildings in Seaton.

Seaton Harbour

In the past, the river mouth was almost a mile wide. Boats could go all the way up to Colyton and the whole valley was tidal. However, the sea continually pushes pebbles into the river mouth. At one point it was completely blocked. Even today it is a constant battle to keep the river mouth open.

A passenger boat ran along the coast to London until the railway line came to the town in 1868. The trains brought tourists to the town until it was closed by Beeching in 1966. Nowadays, Seaton’s Tramway uses part of the railway line.
