Are you looking for dog-friendly Christmas activities in Exeter, but don’t know where to start? Don’t worry I’ve got you covered! I have local knowledge of the city and have plenty of fun festive ideas to share. Exeter is a fantastic place to enjoy Christmas, it’s dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend to explore this beautiful and historic city.
Exeter is located in southeast Devon, on the River Exe. There has been a settlement in the Exeter area since prehistoric times. It first came into national prominence in the year AD55 when the Romans built a fortress on the hill. In medieval times, it became an important woollen trading centre. This is because Exeter was surrounded by sheep farms and the river Exe made it easy to transport products to Europe. Today Exeter is known for tourism, business, its university and the headquarters of the UK Meteorological Office.
Set in Devon, Exeter is a beautiful city and is close to the coast making it perfect for walks with your dog. Plus, there is lots of dog-friendly accommodation and plenty of cafes and restaurants that welcome dogs. You can even go shopping with your furry friend.
These are some of the reasons I enjoy a Christmas trip to Exeter with my dog. Here are my favourite dog-friendly activities and places to visit during the festive season:

Dog-Friendly Christmas on Exeter Quay
The first on my list is Exeter Quay. I love taking my dog to the historical Quayside. It’s a popular hangout for dog-loving locals and I like meeting the other dog owners. There are plenty of riverside walks for my dogs to burn off some energy. I enjoy walking along the scenic River Exe with its green spaces and dog-friendly cafes and pubs.
Dogs are welcome at On the Waterfront, Rockfish and the Quayside Distillery, and there is outdoor seating with scenic views if your dog prefers sitting out in the fresh air. On December 19th from 5.30 pm, Exeter Quay transforms into a festive wonderland. It has a Christmas market with craft stalls to browse for special gifts. There is also live music and Santa’s Grotto. It’s a great place to bring your dog and go late-night shopping.
Exeter Cathedral’s Dog-Friendly Christmas Market
Another must-see Christmas market is held at Exeter’s Cathedral. St Peter’s Cathedral is one of the city’s most well-known buildings. It was built between 1112 and 1400 in Gothic and Norman architectural styles. While dogs are not allowed inside the cathedral, they are welcome on the ground and can enjoy the festivities and outdoor stalls. There are over 100 festive chalets, a new Cloister and a garden area. Guildhall Santa Paws
On December 7th, Guildhall hosts a special event for festive pet photos and paw-traits. Have fun making some festive memories with your pooch! Don’t forget your doggy Christmas jumper for the occasion.
Magdalen Road Dog-friendly Christmas Fair
This Fair is held in the middle of Magdalen Road every year. You can browse at over 50 craft stalls and gift shops. It’s another wonderous place to go Christmas shopping. There will also be live music to get you and your dog in the festive spirit.
Rougemont Gardens
Located in the heart of Exeter, this dog-friendly park is a beautiful walking trail, picnic spot and gorgeous garden for you and your dog to explore. Taking your furry friend for a walk in beautiful surroundings will provide you both with quality bonding time. Dog-Friendly Exeter Green Circle Walk
A 12-mile walking route around Exeter City which has something for everyone. You can explore nature and peaceful footpaths with your furry friend. Remember to check your dog is not cold during your winter walks together. If your pup is cold, he might need a winter coat to keep him warm. Dog-friendly Self-Guided Exeter Heritage Trail
Exeter has several self-guided walking trails such as the City Wall Trail, Wollen Trail and the Medieval Trail which are perfect for a historic stroll with your dog. You can download the free leaflets for the City Wall Trail, Woollen Trail and Medieval Trail using the links I’ve provided.
Riverside Valley Park
located on the south side of Exeter, along the flood plains of the river Exe. This beautiful park covers 99 acres and is noted for its endless buttercup meadows making it ideal for Instagram photos of your furry friend.
The Ludwell Valley Park Butterfly Trail.
The park has various entry points, including Ludwell Lane, Topsham Road, Parkland Drive, and Pynes Hill. From here the trail takes you through fields, cherry orchards, and along the Northbrook stream, providing stunning views over Exeter. Ludwell Valley Park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including harvest mice, whitethroats, blackcaps, and butterflies like the orange-tip and painted lady. This park is a perfect place for a peaceful walk, enjoying nature, and exploring the beautiful landscapes of Exeter with your dog.
Stock Wood
This beautiful woodland is on the north edge of the city and has some of the oldest trees in Devon. There are several well-marked trails that your dog will love, as well as a picnic area. It’s also a great spot for wildlife.
Dog-Friendly Pubs and Cafes in Exeter
Many pubs and cafes in Exeter welcome dogs.
Dog-friendly pubs include the Swans Nest, On the Waterfront and the Blue Ball Inn. But the pub I like the most is The Mill on the Exe, the stylish red brick mill is near Blackaller Weir. I have fond memories of Christmas meals here accompanied by my furry friends.
If you prefer a pitstop in a dog-friendly cafe there are many to choose from, How an Earth Vegan, Mangos Cafe and Boston Tea Party to mention a few. Whatever your preference you will find somewhere to relax with your dog.
Belle Isle Park
Situated to the south of Exeter city centre, you and your pup will find Belle Isle Park. It’s a lovely 7.5-acre green space on the banks of the River Exe. The park is popular with dog owners and wildlife lovers.
Haldon Forest Park
Just a short drive from Exeter, Haldon Forest Park has miles of well-signposted walking routes through 3,500 acres of woodland. It’s perfect for a festive winter walk with your dog.
Dartmoor National Park
Located west of Exeter, Dartmoor offers stunning landscapes and plenty of trails for dog walking. Some areas may have restrictions, so check ahead.
